Grapefruit (Citrus x paradise) is a sweet/tangy fruit of ten varieties once known as the "forbidden fruit". That is until, in the 1800s, a Jamaican farmer named it grapefruit to describe the grape-like clusters in which it grows. Haitians make jam; Costa Ricans cook and stuff it with dulce de leche for the dessert, toronja rellena, and Americans serve it in salads with creamy avocadoes or cut in half at room temperature or broiled slightly with a sprinkle of sugar to enhance the sweetness. The top producers are China and the U.S., where it grows in California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida.
