Hibiscus, part of the mallow family (Malvaceae) produces large colorful leaves and grows in both subtropical and tropical regions. It was domesticated in Africa (or the Sudan) 6,000 years ago and has long been used as an herbal tea by the Egyptians for lowering body temperature and as a diuretic; by Iranians who believe it lowers blood pressure, and recent international research suggests its anthocyanins may hold antioxidant properties to fight disease.
