Turmeric is a spice closely related to ginger. Similarly to ginger, the root is thick and pronged, though the inner flesh has a distinctive orangey-yellow color compared to ginger's yellowish-white. Turmeric is popular in both Asian and African cuisine, where it is used in curries, rice dishes, and baked goods, as well as juices, cakes, yogurts, dairy products, and drinks. Turmeric has a pungent, earthy-sweet taste with a slightly peppery finish.
